ATM containing Rs 14 lakh stolen in Haryana

KURUKSHETRA: An SBI ATM containing Rs 14 lakh was uprooted and stolen at 1.15am, about 40 metres from a police post on Monday.
This is the second such incident in north Haryana in the past 48 hours. An ATM was stolen in a similar fashion in Saha, about 66km from Pehowa on Saturday.
The thieves used a pick-up van to carry the machine, said Pehowa police post incharge sub-inspector (SI) Rajpal. He added a police team had checked the ATM around 12.30am and the thieves struck after that.
On a complaint by Anil Kumar, manager of the company which manages the ATM, a case for theft and break-in has been registered at Pehowa police station.
The cop said their preliminary investigation revealed that the ATM was a soft target for the thieves as it did not have a strong foundation to hold it in the booth and it remained open during the night.
“They fled towards Kaithal and passed through Keorak village toll plaza on National Highway 65. They also paid toll, but officials at the plaza did not note down the vehicle number and let them pass through the barrier. The number plate of their vehicle was also not clear in the CCTV camera footage at the toll plaza as they used a bar light to hide it,” added the SHO.
He said the thieves first recced the area and turned away nearby CCTV cameras. Police don’t even know how many culprits were involved.
