GMDA contractor booked for illegal mining in Aravalis

GURUGRAM: A contractor of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) was booked on Sunday for carrying out illegal mining in the Aravalis.
According to the authority, the contractor – Shiv Pro Build Pvt Ltd – was allotted the project in December 2019 to construct dividing roads in sectors 77, 78, 79 and 79A. The contractor was also responsible for the maintenance of these road for three years.
“The work order was issued in December last year and due to some pending issues, the contractor was directed through a letter (dated January 16) to stop excavation and mining of stone. However, during the site visit on February 26 it was found that four earth movers, one dumper and one rock breaker was deployed by the contractor to carry out excavation of Aravalis, which is the property of the state government,” a GMDA official said.
When asked why the department had allowed mining despite the Supreme Court putting a blanket ban on it in Aravalis, the official said the contractor was supposed to mine the hill only during the road construction. But, once the order was issued to stop mining, the contractor should have followed the instruction. “It needs to be investigated if the contractor was carrying out illegal mining and transporting the stones to his other project sites,” he added.
On February 26, GMDA filed a complaint against the contractor at Kherki Daula police station, following which an FIR under sections 188 (disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 379 (theft) of the IPC and Section 21(4) of mines and minerals Act was registered on Sunday. The contractor could not be reached for comment.
TOI had recently reported that the district mining department claimed that it has managed to tackle illegal mining activities in Aravalis.
