Gurugram: Man who killed Taekwondo player last year arrested

GURUGRAM: The crime branch of Gurugram police has arrested a man in Rajasthan for the murder of a national-level Taekwondo player in the city last year.
He allegedly shot the player in November after she refused to marry him.
According to police, Sombir, who was also a Taekwondo player and coach, killed Sarita on November 12 last year. While Sarita hailed from Bhoa Khurd and had won a gold medal in Taekwondo, Sombir was from Jhajjar. Sarita and Sombir had met each other at a sports tournament where the accused was a coach in 2013.
Both grew close thereafter. Sombir then expressed his wish to marry Sarita, but she turned down his proposal.
This was followed by months of stalking, threats and harassment. Sarita had filed a complaint against Sombir at Bilaspur police station in August 2019 alleging sexual harassment and stalking. In November, Sombir and Sarita had another argument over the issue. Enraged, he allegedly shot her in the chest, leaving her dead, and fled.
On the basis of complaint by Sarita’s family, an FIR was lodged against Sombir under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 449 (house trespass to commit offence punishable with death) of IPC.
Cops said Sombir is named as accused in five different cases. After the murder, he kept moving from one place to another in order to avoid police. After working on the case for almost 11 months, Sector 40 crime branch tracked Sombir to Dausa in Rajasthan and arrested him with an accomplice on Wednesday. They were produced in court on Thursday and sent to police custody for interrogation. He told police that he wanted to marry Sarita but she refused, and hence he killed her. “He also revealed that he has been involved in cases of mobile phone snatching and extortion. He had sought Rs 50 lakh from a mobile shop owner as protection money,” police spokesperson Boken said.
