AMBALA: A new laboratory for testing samples for novel coronavirus will be established at a polyclinic in Sector 10, Ambala City, according to civil surgeon Dr Kuldeep Singh.
Kuldeep, who on Sunday inspected the site, said the laboratory is equipped to conduct around 200 Covid-19 tests daily. “The health department will not have to wait too long for results. We will be able to get reports of Covid-19 suspects or patients in 8-12 hours. Currently, it takes around 24 hours. So far, we are sending samples to nearby labs at Chandigarh, Karnal, Panchkula, Sonipat and Rohtak,” he said.
The work on installation of machines at the lab is expected to finish by Monday evening. “We are applying for permission from Indian Council of Medical Research on Monday. The nod is expected in another two days,” he said.
The department was planning to add a cartridgebased nucleic acid amplification test (CBNAAT) machine to the lab to enhance the capacity to another 80-90 samples per day. “So, we will be able to test around 280-290 more samples per day. In the coming time, we are planning to extend the capacity up to 500 samples per day. We could also take samples from neighbouring districts like Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar,” he said.
