KARNAL: In contrast to the state government’s claims of clearing payments within 72 hours, Karnal farmers and arhatiyas (commission agents) say they have not received payments for wheat for nearly three weeks now and they are running from pillar to post to secure the same.
Although officials have claimed that they have cleared payments for wheat purchases up to April 25, the commission agents alleged they have not receive any money after the procurement of wheat on April 21 and 22.
According to the official data, so far a total of as 6,69,062 metric tonne (MT) wheat has been procured from 39,426 farmers at 172 procurement centres in the district.
Out of all purchases, 3,52,537 MT has been procured by the food and supply department, 2,77,839 MT by Hafed, 38,152 MT by the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation (HWC) and 534 MT by the Food Corporation of India.
But, the district food and civil supplies controller (DFSC) has cleared the dues of only Rs 250 crore, and a large amount is yet to be paid.
The government agencies are procuring wheat at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 1,925 per quintal.
The delay in payment has caused resentment among both arhtiyas and farmers, who are demanding release of payments at the earliest. Farmers said they have also been visiting their commission agents, but to no avail.
